The most significant city of the Czech Republic is the Capital City of Prague, a political, economic and cultural center of the country with an exceptionally preserved historical center. Stone Prague, Golden Prague, Magic Prague, Hundred-Spired Prague, Prague – the Mother of Cities – each of these attributes highlights some of its graces. Prague started to write its history back in the 9th century.
České Budějovice was established at the junction of the Vltava and Malše River by King Přemysl Otakar II. in 1265. The town has a chessboard ground plan. A Dominican monastery with the Virgin Sacrifice Church from the 13th century has been preserved, where they have recently revealed very significant Gothic frescos. Not far from here, in the Renaissance Meat Stores, you can taste the famous local cuisine.
The second biggest and most significant city of the Czech Republic is also the traditional metropolis of Moravia, as well as the historical seat of the Přemysl Family. The municipal rights were granted to Brno by King Wenceslas I. in 1243. The city silhouette is shaped by Špilberk Castle, an Early Gothic palace with two preserved chapels, which became a Baroque fortress later on and a feared prison for political prisoners in the 19th century – the Prison of Peoples.
A town close to Litoměřice, which is an excellent example of a military fortress in the spirit of Classicism architecture, was built by Joseph II. at the end of the 18th century. The complex consists of three parts – main fortress with garrison town, Small Fortress and upper and lower water gates. The garrison town has a regular ground plan with a central square and Classicism church from the beginning of the 19th century.
With its 170,000 inhabitants, the West-Bohemian metropolis Plzeň is the fourth biggest city of the Czech Republic. Its historical predecessor was a one-time guard castle from the 10th century in the present Starý Plzenec. The pre-Romanesque St. Peter’s rotunda is here and has been preserved integrally from that time.Plzeň is famous for its world-famous Pilsner Urquell beer; the brewery offers guided tours and tastings.
